R02 14-2 - Vergin of sign

The icon of the Virgin of the Sign is linked by some to the prophetic text of Isaiah on the Virgin who will become Mother: "The Lord himself will give you a sign. Here the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son whom she will call Emmanule" Is. 7.14

In the icon the Mother of God shows and gives to the world the Lord of the universe. Mary holds with her hands an oval shield of blue-blue color, a reference to heaven and transcendence, depicting Emmanuel, the God with us.

The Child is seated in the womb of the Mother, like on a throne; he is dressed in light and blesses with his right hand. He has open arms to welcome humanity.

Privileged bearer of this Sign, the Virgin Mother is wrapped in a mantle of purple quilted with gold. the three stars placed on her indicate the perpetual virginity of Mary before, during and after childbirth.
